Narrative Mediation is an emerging practice that enables people to restore relationships and rebuild a sense of community even in the face of seemingly irreparable circumstances.
It focuses more on transforming the stories that have led to breakdowns in relationships than changing people’s behaviour or establishing who has the most correct facts.
It is concerned with promoting the respect and dignity of each person involved in the conflict situation, despite any differences across conflicting stories or descriptions of the problem.
Sometimes stories seem to have a life of their own, dragging us along in their wake, in a direction that we wouldn’t necessarily have chosen for ourselves. In conflict situations these stories particularly influence our thinking, shape our experience and impact our relationships.
A narrative mediator aims to empower the parties involved to make their own decisions and take their own actions, and the fundamental unifying principle that underpins narrative mediation is disarmingly simple: that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behaviour when those in positions of authority (the mediator) do things with them, rather than to them or for them.
Narrative mediators do not view conflict as problematic, but rather as inevitable in any society or organisation that is dynamic and constantly changing.
After all, peace is not about everyone agreeing with each other about everything, all the time – it is about having constructive and imaginative processes for getting through when we do not agree – even, when we do not understand the other person’s point of view at all.
Training to be a narrative mediator
In this training programme you will be introduced to:
- The underpinnings of Narrative Mediation
- The hallmarks of a narrative approach to transforming conflict
- The fundamental practices that underlie narrative ideas
- A new framework for conversations
- A new structure of questioning
- How to map the effects of a problem or a dispute
- How to create distance and perspective on a problem situation
- The art of triple loop listening
- How to hear what is absent but implicit in people’s descriptions
- How to assist people to construct counter-stories to the problem story
- Narrative approaches to constructing new possibilities
You will practice:
- Mediating interpersonal conflicts narratively
- Holding conflict transformation conversations using narrative techniques
- Working with counter conflict stories
- Not becoming entangled in the conflict
Applications include but are not limited to:
- Team Breakdowns and misunderstandings
- Breakdown in communication with relatives
- Handling complaints
- Preventing staff grievance escalation

Booking and Conditions
This programme/event is funded by the NHS South West Leadership Academy. If you secure and confirm acceptance of a place on this programme and fail to attend the minimum requirement as detailed below, you/ your employer/ organisation will be charged for the total cost of your place (£980.00).
In order to successfully complete the programme you are expected to attend all dates. As a minimum requirement we would expect participants to attend the first and last Workshops in the series*, plus three of the remaining four Workshops.
