The Strategic System Leadership programme is run nationally this year and is fully funded by HEE and supported by the NHS Leadership Academy. This programme is run in partnership with Yale University and Patrick Geoghegan, Programme Director.
The programme is aimed at groups of three senior leaders from 10 of the 44 STP footprints. Each of the ten ‘trios’ should comprise teams consisting of:
- A senior strategic clinical lead
- A senior strategic lead from another sector – e.g. local authority, wider public sector, 3rd sector
- A strategic managerial lead
The individuals must have a strategic role at the STP level and are instrumental in the successful delivery of the STP.

The programme offers two 6-day modules, with eight months in-between to apply learning and work based assignment and coaching between modules.
- 1 week in the UK (Hertfordshire from 12 – 17 November 2017)
An assignment will be aligned to the delivery of the STP, as well as coaching and technical support being provided to delegates/teams by programme faculty over this period.
- 1 week in the USA (Yale University from 7-13 July 2018)
This will include visits to US Health and Social Care Facilities, with a follow up review in relation to roll out of assignments and application of learning in the work setting.
How to apply
Any interested participants must complete all questions in the individual application form, which is included in the application pack above. They must also state the names of their STP colleagues applying as members of their footprint. Each team member is required to submit an application form, and all completed application forms must be submitted to NWLA.Admin@nhs.net by no later than 9am on Monday 25 September 2017.
The assessment panel will then review all applications and score submissions against pre-defined criteria. A shortlist will be created so that the panelists can conduct one-to-one telephone calls with individuals to further probe their application, their commitment to the programme, the viability of the team and intended outcomes. It will also provide an opportunity to explore each system-wide project. Confirmation of successful participants will be announced during the week commencing Monday 9 October 2017.
